Pekka Korvenmaa
Professor, Aalto University, Helsinki
Leading expert on Finnish design
In his lecture Prof. Korvenmaa gives an overview of the development of Finnish design since the 1870s but emphasizing the post-WW2 decades. Since the early 50s Finnish design became known worldwide. Also in Finland the education in design, the national support systems and the rapidly developing design-intensive industries led to a positive circle benefiting design at large. The “golden age” lasted from post-WW2 years until the mid-70s oil crisis.
Pekka Korvenmaa is the writer of the famous book Finnish Design: A Concise History. The book outlines the evolution of design in Finland from the 1870s to the beginning of the 21st century, focussing on key driving forces such as industrial innovation, training, star designers and pioneering products. Featuring iconic designers and brands, such as Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck for Iittala and Marimekko, Finnish Design: A Concise History is a timely and authoritative study of a fascinating design culture.
