is Finland’s entry in the 2014 Oscars for the Best Foreign Film

An isolated island in the Archipelago of the Baltic Sea in the summer of 1939: Thirteen-year-old Karl comes to the island to work as lighthouse master Hasselbond’s assistant. Master Hasselbond turns Karl down because of his young age. Karl struggles desperately to stay on. Karl and Hasselbond’s oppressed son, Gustaf, make friends but their friendship changes to rivalry and hate when Hasselbond starts to favor Karl over his own son.
“‘The Disciple’ is a simple but bright pearl,” stated the Finnish selection committee, which comprised film professionals. “The film’s universal story and high quality production impressed the jury.”
