CFF invites you to one of Mika Kaurismäki’s very best films:
Road North – Tie Pohjoiseen (2012)
Director: Mika Kaurismäki
Script: Mika Kaurismäki and Sami Keski-Vähälä
Actors: Vesa-Matti Loiri, Samuli Edelmann, Peter Franzen, Irina Björklund
Legendary director Mika Kaurismäki’s (e.g. Three Wise Men, The House of Branching Love) best films have dealt with music or road trips. Road North combines both elements with plenty of heart, as a prodigal father returns to Helsinki to reconnect with the son he abandoned 35 years earlier, when the son was 3, and con him into a journey through the landscape of the country and the landscape of the men’s souls.
Loiri and Edelmann are among Finland’s most beloved performers, singers and actors, and the story was created with the actors in mind. A pivotal moment in the film is when Loiri croons a ballad and Edelmann accompanies him on keyboard.
The overall tone is sweeter than usual for Kaurismäki, without being overly sentimental. Road North was a great success at TIFF in 2012. A heart-warming film.
Finnish with English subtitles.
