SUMMARY:CFF AGM and the Varpu Lindstrom Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:CFF AGM and the Varpu Lindstrom Memorial Lecture \nCanadian Friends of Finland is pleased to announce our first in-person event since 2019! \nReserve this date: \nTuesday\, June 21\, 2022 at 6:30 pm at Agricola Lutheran Church. \nCanadian Friends of Finland will be holding our Annual General Meeting  followed by the Varpu Lindstrom Memorial Lecture by Kaarina Brooks on “Translating Kalevala”. \nKaarina Brooks’ publication of a new translation into English of Kalevala is indeed an historic event. The latest previous translation was from 1989. Kaarina’s translation employs poetry used consistently in the original Finnish. Kaarina feels particularly strongly that Kalevala is most essentially defined by the Kalevala metre. Yet only one of the five earlier translations into English uses the Kalevala metre. Kaarina’s translation also honours the requirement that the lines of Kalevala be  singable\, just as Lönrot had intended. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCopies of the book will be available at the June event.   \nHowever\, if you would like to purchase one prior to that date\, please contact Kaarina Brooks at  brooks.kaarina@gmail.com  \nA flyer will be sent out shortly.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Finnish Independence – Featured Lives - postponed
DESCRIPTION:The health\, safety and well-being of our community members is very important to us. \nWe regret to inform you that owing to the current situation with COVID-19\, \nCelebration of Finnish Independence – Featured Lives\nhas been postponed until further notice. \nOnce conditions permit\, we will be in touch with further information about the possible rescheduling of this event. \nIn the meantime\, please accept our apologies and our best wishes for your continued health and wellbeing. \n\nYou are invited to CFF’s Celebration of Finnish Independence on Saturday\, December 4\, 2021. This year the annual\, highly anticipated celebration features two highlights\, a Piano Recital repeat performance by Toronto piano artist Olga Nechepurenko and a lecture by Kaarina Brooks “Translating Kalevala.” \nKaarina Brooks’ publication of a new translation into English of the Kalevala is indeed an historic event; the latest previous translation is from 1989. To the extent possible\, Kaarina’s translation employs poetic solutions used consistently in the original Finnish. Kaarina feels particularly strongly that the Kalevala is most essentially defined by the unique Kalevala metre. Yet only one of the five earlier translations into English uses the Kalevala metre! Kaarina’s translation also honors\, with great reverence\, the requirement that the lines of the Kalevala be not only singable but singable to the traditional five-note Kalevala tune.  \nWe hope this will be held in-person\, but please hold the date. More info will follow. \nLooking forward to a unique experience. Welcome.

SUMMARY:June 21 Annual General Meeting and the Annual Varpu Lindstrom Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Canadian Friends of Finland\n\n\n\nInvites You to the\nCFF Annual General Meeting\nand the\nAnnual Varpu Lindstrom Memorial Lecture\nSeven Years on the Seven Seas of the World\nDelivered by Pirkko Koskenkylä\n\n\n\nTowards the end of Pirkko’s university studies she received an invitation to Finland’s Commercial TV (MainosTV) to run the popular program primarily for women Today at Home. After that she worked also for MainosTV as a newscaster in current affairs and did travel programs (LomaTV)\, which took her to many places including Canada. \nIn 1992 Pirkko left her TV career and moved to Cannes in the south of France with her future husband Pekka Koskenkylä. Without blinking an eye and totally ignorant about boats\, Pirkko accepted her husband’s invitation to go to sea. Pekka is the creator of the world famous sailing boat\, the Swan. Pekka designed a floating home\, the Voyageur\, that was built in his dockyard in Thailand. Having sold their house\, the Voyageur became their only home for several years. Pirkko’s speech will focus on the sailing routes and exotic places they visited. They were not looking for challenges or difficult and dangerous situations but wanted to enjoy the sea and gorgeous anchoring places. Star moments of life on the sea and the most exciting\, even perilous moments will be a major feature of her lecture. After their seafaring era they built a house in 2002 in the small Medieval town of Bargemon where they each could pursue their passions. Soon thereafter Pirkko’s career as a painter and author began. To date she has written 11 books\, 5 novels\, 3 travelogues\, 2 biographies\, and 1 lifestyle book. She has held two art exhibits in France and three in Finland. Currently Pirkko’s main focus is writing. The protagonists in her novels are women\, who have absorbed Sea-Pirkko’s unyielding and courageous character. \n \n\n\n\n\n\nYou are invited to a Zoom meeting \nWhen: Jun 21\, 2021 02:00 PM \n Please click to register in advance for this meeting. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Who Can Speak About the Truth About the Constitution in Finland? Postponed
DESCRIPTION:The health\, safety and well-being of our community members is very important to us. \nWe regret to inform you that owing to the current situation with COVID-19\, \nAn Evening with Finnish Studies\n&\nFinnish Studies Scholarships Awards Ceremony 2020\nhas been postponed until further notice. \nOnce conditions permit\, we will be in touch with further information about the possible rescheduling of this event. \nIn the meantime\, please accept our apologies and our best wishes for your continued health and wellbeing. \n\n\nWHO CAN SPEAK TRUTH \nABOUT THE CONSTITUTION IN FINLAND?\nDelivered by Dr. Ida Koivisto \n(University of Helsinki\, Finland) \n  \nWho can state what the constitution requires in Finland? The talk discusses constitutionality control in Finland and legal experts’ – primarily law professors – customary role in it. In Finland\, the constitutionality control of proposed legislation takes place mainly in the Constitutional Law Committee of the Parliament. Judging from recent public debates\, it seems that these experts are decreasingly appreciated. Why is this happening right now? The question is approached from three different angles: the authority of those experts to speak truth about constitution\, the makeup of legal expertise and the politics of it. It is argued that while legal expertise per se\, or its meaning in constitutionality control\, has not really changed\, the way it is perceived\, has. There seems to be a tension between the legal experts’ perceived professional and political roles. Have people had enough of experts – also in Finland? \n  \nIda Koivisto (PhD) is an assistant professor of public law at the University of Helsinki\, Finland. Her research interests cover administrative and constitutional law\, legal theory and socio-legal studies. She is particularly interested in the relationship between law and other normative systems in society. She is currently working on a project on the ideal of transparency and its theoretical preconditions. She is about to embark on a new project on law and algorithmic transparency. \nEveryone Welcome! Reception with refreshments to follow!

SUMMARY:The Karjala Story: Revolution\, War\, Wonder - March 21
DESCRIPTION: \n\n  \n\nFinnish Studies Program at University of Toronto &\nCanadian Friends of Finland (CFF) warmly welcome you to  \nAn Evening with Finnish Studies\ndevoted to the annual \nVarpu Lindström Memorial Lecture\n& \nFinnish Studies Scholarships 2018 Awards Ceremony\nTHE KARJALA STORY:\nREVOLUTION\, WAR\, WONDER\n– A human viewpoint of the political\, military and cultural history of Karjala (and Finland) \nDelivered by Karl Tuira  \n \nThe lecture discusses the history of Karjala (and Finland)\, from Kalevala Prehistory to the Continuation War and returning ”Home” to Karjala. It will weave historical facts with family lore\, family memoirs\, original manuscripts\, military diaries\, photos\, and excerpts from classical as well as less known Finnish books. \nAs Karjala was an integral part of Finland\, the presentation is an outline of Finnish history; and as Karjala was the battleground between Finland and Russia it is a military history. It is also a cultural history looking at the epic and enchanting history of Karjala from a human perspective. The talk is based on the 5 years of research Tuira did for his book\, “The Karjala Story: Revolution\, War\, Wonder” (2017). \n  \n \nKarl (Kaarlo) Tuira is an author and historian born in Finland. His parents were from Viipuri and the farm countryside near Ihantala. He immigrated to Sault Ste Marie Canada with his parents in 1951. After earning a degree in History and an MBA from the University of Toronto he embarked on a world-wide career as a senior manager in the hi-tech industry.  \nUpon retiring he began writing books – The Karjala Story being his pride and joy. SUMMARY:LAW\, TRUST AND LEGITIMACY:   FINNISH AND NORDIC EXPERIENCES  - Nov 29
DESCRIPTION:Finnish Studies Program at the University of Toronto & \nCanadian Friends of Finland (CFF) jointly welcome you to \nthe 11th public lecture in the series \nAn Evening with Finnish Studies. \nLAW\, TRUST AND LEGITIMACY:\nFINNISH AND NORDIC EXPERIENCES\ndelivered by Prof. Kimmo Nuotio \n(University of Helsinki\, Finland) \nThe Nordic countries are known for people’s high confidence in the authorities\, including the police\, the prosecutors and the courts. People are also well networked\, civil society is strong\, and political life is less polarized than in countries which only have two main political parties. Nordic countries are known for their welfare systems\, which are based on a status concept – simply being a citizen or a lawful resident. \n \nThis is all an important asset in terms of the legitimacy of the law: The law functions easier under such conditions. The law gives protection and works within society. It is not a coincidence that the level of corruption is very low in the Nordic countries. Recent trends in political life indicate\, however\, that new tensions have arisen. The Nordic countries are facing a serious test for their approach after the new nationalist and populist parties have appeared. \nProfessor Kimmo Nuotio has been researching criminal law and legal theory from a variety of perspectives\, often with links to social and political theory. In recent publications\, Nuotio has investigated issues of multiculturalism\, hate speech\, terrorism\, and European criminal law. Nuotio has his PhD in Law from the University of Helsinki. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki from 2010 to 2017. He has been much involved in researcher education and he has worked as the Vice-director of a Centre of Excellence funded by the Academy of Finland. \nFree admission. Reception with light refreshments follows. SUMMARY:Varpu Lindström Memorial Lecture & Finnish Studies Scholarships 2017 Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n Canadian Friends of Finland (CFF) and \nFinnish Studies Program at University of Toronto \ninvite you to the annual \nVarpu Lindström Memorial Lecture\n& Finnish Studies Scholarships 2017 Ceremony\nIn Mourning\, Together: The Everyday History of Death in ‘Finnish North America’\nDelivered by Dr Samira Saramo\n \nIn Defiant Sisters\, Varpu Lindström noted early Finnish immigrants’ “preoccupation” with death\, caused by dangerous working conditions and lack of community networks. Three decades later\, new research on death and mourning delves into the ways that the fear of dying alone\, far from family and friends\, brought people together and served as an important factor in the emergence of Finnish immigrant community life. Focussing on the period of 1880–1939\, this lecture offers a view of the ways death sets people into action\, caring for the dying and bereaved\, conducting rituals\, and coming together as family and community to grieve and commemorate the deceased. Drawing on personal letters and autobiographical writing\, we hear Finnish immigrants narrate death and mourning in their own words\, enriching our view of Finnish North American history. \n  \nSamira Saramo is currently a visiting scholar at the Finnish Studies Program at the \nUniversity of Toronto. She is an Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Turku’s John Morton Center for North American Studies (Finland). Saramo’s research focuses on ethnicity\, gender\, emotion\, death\, and social movements in both historical and current contexts. SUMMARY:The Other Side of Hope - Dec 8+ TIFF Lightbox
DESCRIPTION:CFF is happy to promote… \nFILMS WE LIKE PRESENTS \nAki Kaurismäki’s \nTHE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE \n(Toivon tuolla puolen) \nMASTER’S PROGRAM TIFF 2017 \nWinner Silver Bear for Best Director\, Berlin Film Festival 2017 \n  \nFamiliar to TIFF audiences for his signature droll humour and empathetic characters The Other Side of Hope is master Finnish auteur Aki Kaurismäki’s follow-up to his 2011 film Le Havre.  In both films\, Kaurismäki illuminates the plight of refugees\, chance encounters\, the kindness of strangers and the possibility of a brighter future. \nThe Other Side of Hope tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Khaled (Sherwan Haji)\, a Syrian asylum seeker from Aleppo who’s lost his entire family and Wikstrom (Sakari Kuosmanen) a fifty-something traveling salesman  who’s left his alcoholic wife and purchased a restaurant in the back streets of Helsinki with his meager winnings from poker. \nWhen the authorities decide to return Khaled to the ruins of Aleppo he opts to stay illegally in the country and disappears into the streets of Helsinki where he meets racism\, as well as pure kindness.   Wikström finds Khaled sleeping in the inner yard of his restaurant and seeing something of himself in the battered man\, hires him as a cleaner and a dishwasher. \nTogether\, they help each other through challenges they face in their unfamiliar and often baffling new worlds. With hilarious sight gags\, poker-faced one liners and a toe-tapping rockabilly soundtrack\, The Other Side of Hope weaves Kaurismäki’s unparalleled wit with a stinging critique of an unforgiving bureaucracy that greets vulnerable asylum seekers in modern-day Europe. Humane and sincere\, it’s proof of cinema’s power to tell stories that matter\, with beauty and heart. \nThe Other Side of Hope opens in New York and LA on Friday\, December 1\, 2017 and in Canada on Friday\, December 8\, 2017.   The film is distributed in Canada by Films We Like and in the U.S. by Janus Films. \nPlease click for TIFF SCREENINGS \nAKI KAURISMÄKI\, Writer\, Director\, Editor\, Producer \nAki Kaurismäki\, born in 1957\, grew up in “the age terrorized by television\,” and has tried and managed to stick to the inseparable realities of the real world and the “deep screen” that only 35 mm film light against electronic machinations\, the beauty of artisanal tradition against technological overkill – makes possible. He has never used any other material\, least of all video\, and is very proud for having continued the tradition of “real cinema.” \nHis minimalist style is all his own (and that of the great cinematographer of all his films\, Timo Salminen); he never entered the Finnish Film School (as he was suspected to be “too cynical”). At the same time\, his films are full of allusions\, but always invisible ones\, parts of a constant dialogue wherein particles of film culture reveal realities of human environment\, society and psyche: as it is now\, and as it was during the tender years of Aki’s childhood. \nSAKARI KUOSMANEN (“Wikström”) \nSakari Kuosmanen (born 1956)\, is one of Kaurismäki’s favourite actors. With a long career both as an actor and a musician\, Kuosmanen is perhaps best remembered from his lead role in Kaurismäki’s film Juha\, as the gruff harbour guard in The Man Without a Past\, and of his role as a doorman in Drifting Clouds. Kuosmanen has also appeared in the following films directed by Aki Kaurismäki: Calamari Union\, Shadows In Paradise\, Leningrad Cowboys Go America and Total Balalaika Show. \nSHERWAN HAJI (“Khaled”) \nSherwan Haji (born 1985) plays the role of Khaled\, a Syrian refugee. Haji\, who came to Finland from Syria in 2010\, graduated from Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus in 2008. Haji acted in several TV series in Syria and continued his studies in Cambridge School of Art – Anglia Ruskin University in 2015\, graduating last year with a Master of Arts degree. Since 2012 Haji has\, in addition to acting\, also written and directed several short films and video installations for Lion’s Line\, his production company. This is Haji’s first main role in a feature film. The film’s soundtrack also includes music performed by Haji on saz\, a traditional stringed instrument. \nFILMS WE LIKE \nFounded by award-winning documentary filmmaker Ron Mann (Grass\, Comic Book Confidential\, Altman) Films We Like is a boutique distributor of documentary\, independent and international films in Canada.  Upcoming releases for Fall 2017 include LUCKY\, BOMBSHELL:  THE HEDY LAMARR STORY and THE DIVINE ORDER. \nJANUS FILMS \nSince 1956\, Janus Films has been dedicated to bringing international art-house films to U.S. audiences. Its library of over 800 films include classics by Akerman\, Antonioni\, Bergman\, Fellini\, Kurosawa\,  Truffaut\, Ozu\, Tarkovksy and Varda and major works by contemporary masters\, Jim Jarmusch\, Joel and Ethan Coen and John Waters.  Janus Films also releases carefully selected first-run titles\, including Kirsten Johnson’s critically acclaimed CAMERAPERSON\, Agnieszka Smoczynska’s hit THE LURE and Paolo Sorrentino’s THE GREAT BEAUTY which won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. \nRunning time:  98 minutes \nFinnish\, Arabic and English with English subtitles \nShot in 35mm

The leading star in the movie\, no other than Selänne himself\, doesn’t need an introduction. Timo Koivusalo’s film Sibelius follows his career as he develops into one of the most creative minds of his time only to have the maelstrom of outside pressure and self-criticism to gradually suffocate his creativity. It is also about the great love story between Sibelius and his wife of just about 70 years\, Aino.\nThe movie tells the unique story of Jean Sibelius. It is a life story\, a love story and a story about the music that changed history. \nFinnish music performed by Lili Ahopelto before the film.\nDiscussion and reception with coffee and pulla follows! \n \n\n\nTHE MAN WITHOUT A PAST\nOct 11\nThe Man Without a Past (2002)\, directed by internationally renowned filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki\, tells a story of an unnamed man trying to rebuild his life and make sense of his place in the world after getting mugged and losing his memory. It is both a humorous and melancholy story about people and society – typical of the unique Kaurismäki style. \nThe Man without a Past is a movie that defined Finnish Cinema and made Kaurismäki internationally famous director. The film won a slew of awards at Cannes Film Festival (including the Grand Jury prize and best actress for Kati Outinen)\, and it was nominated for an Oscar\, making it one the most successful Finnish movies of all time. \nLocation: Innis College\, University of Toronto\nDoors Open: 6:30pm\nProgram starts at: 7pm\nTickets: $15 (or $65 for the full series)\nPre film talk by: Professor Emeritus Börje Vähämäki:“Aki Kaurismäki’s Contribution to Finnish Cinema”\nDiscussion and reception with coffee and pulla follows! \n \n\nTHE UNKNOWN SOLDIER\nOctober 25\nThe Unknown Soldier (1955) was and still is the most successful and most watched film ever made in Finland. Directed by Edvin Laine and based on a novel written by Väinö Linna\, The Unknown Soldier has touched the hearts of millions by telling the story about the Continuation War in 1941. In the movie the story about the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union is told through the viewpoint of ordinary Finnish soldiers. The Unknown Soldier occupies a central place in the consciousness of the Finnish population and it is a Finnish tradition to view this film to celebrate Finland’s independence. It is a movie you just want see over and over again. \nIn Finland The Unknown Soldier won six categories at Jussi Awards\, including the award for the Best Direction. The movie was also nominated for a Bafta Award in 1959. \nLocation: Innis College\, University of Toronto\nDoors Open: 6:00pm\nProgram starts at: 6.30pm\nTickets: $15\nPre film performance by: Timo Närhinsalo\, a Mannerheim impersonator.\nDiscussion and reception with coffee and pulla follows! \n \n\n\nTHE ETERNAL ROAD\nNov 1\n  \nThe movie The Eternal Road (Ikitie) is based on Antti Tuuri’s novel of the same name. This novel\, in turn\, is largely based on the historical research conducted by late Professor Varpu Lindström into the lives and fates of the Finnish Americans and Canadians who moved to Soviet Karelia in the 1930s. The film is directed by AJ Annila. The film premiered in Finland about a month ago and received exceptionally raving reviews:\nAn immediate classic! Heavyweight writer. Brilliant acting. A visionary film director. These are all things that make Ikitie – The Eternal Road one of the most successful filmatizations of a novel ever seen in Finland. \nAntti Tuuri is an outstanding story teller\, who always researches his topics diligently. The fact that he extracts much of his facts from Varpu Lindstrom’s writings serves to generate in-depth and emotionally accurate scenes\, which are quite conducive to transforming prose writing to film. A large number of Tuuri’s novels have been made into film\, for example\, Plainlands (1988)\, The Winter War (1989)\, Ambush (1999)\, Mother of Mine (2005)\,and now The Eternal Road (2017) offers a dignified addition to this series. \n(This a change to Our Finland100Toronto Film Festival – Tom of Finland is out\, The Eternal Road is in. \nThe film festival organized jointly by the Finnish Studies Program at the University of Toronto and CFF has had to drop the announced Tom of Finland film. Unfortunately\, it could not be procured. In its place will be shown a brand new highly celebrated movie fresh from Finland The Eternal Road.) \n\nLocation: Innis College\, University of Toronto\nDoors Open: 6:30pm\nProgram starts at: 7pm\nTickets: $15

It is one of the fastest growing capitals in Europe. Helsinki City Council approved a new City Plan for the city in October 2016. \nThe new City Plan is a comprehensive general plan for future land use and transportation. It includes a vision that sets the direction for the city’s growth over the next 30 years. The vision includes the idea of Helsinki as a network city of rail traffic with an expanding strong main center. The vision also examines the city as part of the city region\, as a part the network of European big cities and one of the global hubs with great flight connections to Asia and one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe. \nThe City Plan makes it possible to have approximately 860\,000 inhabitants and 560\,000 jobs in Helsinki in 2050. Helsinki will become a denser city than it is today\, with several district centers connected by efficient public transport and still preserving its major green areas. In the year 2050 the whole Helsinki region will be home to 2 million inhabitants and over 1 million jobs. \nDuring the planning process\, the new City Plan was named as “The Urban Plan”. One of the major land use solutions\, sometimes considered a radical one\, makes it possible to transform motorway-like thoroughfares into city boulevards. They will constitute new urban districts that will feature a mixed urban structure consisting of a light-rail-tram\, housing\, jobs and services. \nAn implementation plan to guide the larger development areas is under preparation. It will propose how to reach the goals set in the City Plan. It will also define the implementation schedule and order of the major transformation projects. The implementation of the city boulevards step-by-step offers the possibility to support a systemic change in the transportation system of the whole region. The goals set in the City Plan support the use of non-polluting vehicles and reduce the number of privately owned cars. They will also guide the city to invest significantly into rail-based transport. \nTransparency First: Open City Plan Process in Helsinki \nHeikki Mäntymäki\, Communications Manager\, City of Helsinki\, City Environment Sector \nThe Helsinki City Plan process was an open and interactive four-year process. A large amount of experience-based information was collected from Helsinki citizens. This is important\, as the City Plan will have a very long-term impact on the city’s development. The process has been made more challenging by the fact that the Urban Plan represents a new kind of strategic city plan. It does not allocate zones for different uses with detailed lines drawn on the map. Instead\, the City Plan divides Helsinki into one-hectare squares\, with the primary intended purpose of land use presented for each. \nThe City Plan has been drafted in an open and interactive manner. The process has included a large number of various events\, and the city plan materials have been extensively published on the web. An online survey was conducted on Helsinki residents\, and blogs have served as a platform for discussion. \nYoung people have had their own events tailored to their interests\, city planners have actively participated in events organised by various associations\, and the city plan has been the subject of active discussion and debate on various social media platforms. A very broad range of various interactive methods have been employed during the planning process to ensure that citizens can be closely involved in many ways. \nThe city planners wanted to hear the views of as many citizens as possible to serve as the foundation for drafting the city plan. To this end\, the Helsinki 2050 map survey was implemented in late 2013 in the form of an intuitive online application.  Visitors could mark the online map with references to good construction locations\, important green areas or new traffic solutions\, for example. A total of approximately 4\,700 people participated in the survey and made more than 33\,000 entries in the map. The survey materials have been carefully analysed and all of the material has also been published as open data. The material represents a comprehensive and internationally unique database of citizens’ views on their city’s development. \n
