The Eternal Lure of the Kalevala

                by

           professor emeritus Börje Vähämäki

There is an infinite number of ways to approach the 180-year old National Epic of Finland. Professor Vähämäki’s talk will focus on three dimensions which bring the Kalevala lasting international luster:

1) Universally prominent myths – origin myths, and myths about the make-up of the world

2) Understanding the human condition – family, courtship, weddings, death

3) Kalevala’s dramas – duels, epic battles, and the exquisitely crafted tragedy of Kullervo.

The lecture will feature illustrations and text samples.

Free admission. Everybody welcome! Reception with coffee and pulla follows.
