“Someone has had the opportunity to grow up in two lands. Their home may lie in both lands. If they know them well, they may truly be wonderlands.” (Lainio)
Anu Muhonen’s talk brings greetings from Sweden and the Sweden Finnish community through glimpses of ethnographic research among people of Finnish heritage living in Sweden. Muhonen has investigated multilingualism and multicultural practices among Sweden Finns and explored how young people of Finnish heritage express and negotiate their multilingual and multicultural identities in school, within families and in their leisure time activities. In the Memorial Lecture she will reflect on the role of Finnishness, Finnish heritage and Finnish language in the lives of Sweden Finns.
Anu Muhonen received her MA from the University of Jyväskylä and a double PhD, from University of Jyväskylä and Stockholm University. For the last 12 years, she has worked at the Department of Finnish at Stockholm University.
