ALEKSIS KIVI – THE CORNERSTONE OF FINNISH LITERATURE

Aleksis Kivi is the national writer of Finland. His most famous book, Seven Brothers, is well known and appreciated worldwide. It has been translated into more than 30 languages. As a person, Aleksis Kivi is still quite a mystery – we cannot even be sure about how he looked. In her lecture Tilli gives an overview of different representations of Aleksis Kivi, focusing on what makes him so unique and how Kivi’s influence appears in the Finnish language and literary world.

Anna Tilli is a visiting graduate student at the Finnish Studies Program at the University of Toronto. She specializes in comparative literature, museology and Finnish language and literature at the University of Helsinki. In her master’s thesis, Tilli investigates the representations of Aleksis Kivi and focuses on analyzing the exhibition of the literary house museum Home of Aleksis Kivi situated in Nurmijärvi, Finland.
