Canadian Friends of Finland will be holding our Annual General Meeting followed by the Varpu Lindstrom Memorial Lecture by Kaarina Brooks on “Translating Kalevala”.

rina Brooks’ publication of a new translation into English of Kalevala is indeed an historic event. The latest previous translation was from 1989. Kaarina’s translation employs poetry used consistently in the original Finnish. Kaarina feels particularly strongly that Kalevala is most essentially defined by the Kalevala metre. Yet only one of the five earlier translations into English uses the Kalevala metre. Kaarina’s translation also honours the requirement that the lines of Kalevala be singable, just as Lönrot had intended.
